It’s a rainy Monday here in my part of Laurens County, SC. Tropical Storm Alberto is hauling in a lot of water. The ground is already saturated from a generous amount of previous rainfall. We’ve been advised to watch for mudslides and localized flooding as streams and rivers rise out of their banks. Many is the time I’ve been thankful to live on a hill.

As I knit a few new items, (you’ve seen the coaster at the top), I’ve chosen some yarn that makes me think of patriotic things. The colors are red, white and blue. We see our national flag moving in the wind and there are various displays using these  three colors.

While most of us enjoy a three-day weekend, many of us are missing someone who is currently serving over seas. I’ve a cousin in the Air Force and he is deployed somewhere in the Middle East. My uncle is a retired Marine. One of my brothers is retired Army. There are a lot of military personnel in my family.

As a holiday, we know various places of business are closed completely or will close early. The banks are closed. The post office is closed. The dump here is closed so the trash will have to wait. Hobby Lobby is closing early. Through the years, it’s become just a matter of course to see this business closed or that business closed.

We take a day off as a nation to remember our military throughout all the years. My generation was taught to stand for the flag out of respect for this nation and the men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedom too many take for granted.

A bank that is closed for one day is of little concern in the grand scheme of things, but a closed mind is something else entirely. We have allowed a creeping disease to invade, unchecked, across the land.

Too many young people today don’t understand what Memorial Day is and they don’t care. I like what one fellow said to his friend.

“The two biggest problems facing American today are ignorance and apathy.” His friend replied, “I don’t know and I don’t care.”

As long  as we tolerate the disrespect, it will continue to grow. We took God out of school and the devil moved in. Nature truly abhors a vacuum.

This nation will live with some kind of moral standard, but whose standard will it be? Will it be the God who teaches love and grace or will it be the god that says kill the infidel?

In case you haven’t noticed, we are at war right here on American soil.  There is a battle raging for the hearts and minds of our children. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Too much complacency has brought us to this point. God help us all and may GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
